Poland will send to Ukraine 4 MiG29 fighters In the coming days, Polish President Andrzej Duda said Thursday (16) to become the first Western ally to deliver such aircraft.

The Polish government, one of Ukraine’s staunchest supporters, has intervened leadership role by persuading allies to deploy heavy weapons to Ukraine.

“First of all, literally in the next few days, as far as I remember, we will deliver four fully operational aircraft to Ukraine,” Duda said at a press conference. “The rest will be prepared, done.”

Duda said Poland had about 10 to 20 MiG 29 jets.

On Tuesday, Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki said deliveries could take place in four to six weeks.

NATO allies in the former communist east, like Poland and Slovakia, have been supporting Ukraine since Russia invaded the country on February 24, 2022.

Slovakia is also considering secondment MiG29 jets for Ukraine, but has not yet made a decision.

Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen said Thursday the debate over sending fighter jets out of the country was ongoing. “We are discussing this in the group of allied countries. This is a great wish of Ukraine,” she said.

Poland has already sent 14 Germanmade Leopard 2 tanks to Ukraine.

MiG29 fighters are original aircraft Sovietdeveloped for air combat and in use since 1983.
