Authorities in the US state of Illinois have opened an investigation into the deaths of seven people in the city of Joliet. The bodies were in two apartment buildings on the same street. The local police are looking for a suspect.
“The worst crime scene”
Joliet Police Chief Bill Evans reported in a press conference how shocking the crime scene was: “I've been a police officer for 29 years. This is probably the worst crime scene I've ever been to.” The severity of the case is causing great excitement among the authorities and the city's population.
Search for suspect
Police announced that 23yearold Romeu Nance is the main suspect in the crime. He was recorded driving a red Toyota Camry, a vehicle linked to two shootings on Sunday (21), one of which resulted in the death of a 28yearold man. Authorities are on alert as they consider the suspect to be armed and dangerous.
The bond with the victims
According to the Portal news agency, police reported that Romeu Nance was already aware of the victims. Authorities believe the victims come from the same family. Although the county sheriff initially viewed Sunday's incidents as random, the presence of the same vehicle on both occasions reinforces the connection between the incidents.
Searches are ongoing
Local law enforcement, in collaboration with agents from the FBI Fugitive Squad, are searching for the suspect. Meanwhile, Joliet became the scene of one of the most tragic criminal events in the city's history.
