In Mexico, 45 bags of body parts could belong to call center workers
Authorities in the state of Jalisco, Mexico, said Thursday (2) that human body parts that appeared to belong to seven missing call center workers were found in 45 bags.
State prosecutors said the material was undergoing forensic testing for formal identification.
The discovery took place earlier this week in the municipality of Zapopan, on the outskirts of Guadalajara, the capital of Jalisco. Police were looking for seven call center workers, aged between 20 and 30, who had disappeared. An eighth person who may be linked to the group is also missing.
On Tuesday (May 30), Security Minister Rosa Icela Rodriguez told a news conference that call center workers were involved in some type of real estate fraud and phone extortion. So far, this is the possible motivation for the disappearance.
The authorities are now trying to find out how many people were in the bags found, their identity and under what circumstances they died.
More than 100,000 people are missing in Mexico, mainly due to organized crime. The state of Jalisco is one of the areas where large cartels such as the New Generation of the Jalisco Cartel (CJNG) operate, as well as rival groups such as Nueva Plaza.
