Details surrounding Jorge Masvidal’s alleged attack on Colby Covington began to emerge after the two UFC rivals were involved in an altercation late Monday night.
Miami Beach police on Tuesday released an incident report that lists Masvidal as a suspect. Covington’s name was edited because he was the victim, however multiple sources confirmed to MMA Fighting that Covington was the victim of an altercation that took place outside a Papi Steak restaurant.
According to the police report, Masvidal faces felony charges in connection with the incident.
Upon arrival, the police spoke to Covington, who told them that he was “attacked by Jorge Masvidal”. Covington claimed that he left the Papi Steak Restaurant and that Masvidal “ran up to him from the left and, without warning, punched him twice in the face with a clenched fist.”
The report states that Covington received one blow to the mouth and another to the left eye. Covington said he heard Masvidal say “You shouldn’t have been talking about my kids” during the attack.
Covington added that he saw “three or four other unidentified men” approach him “aggressively” so he pushed off before running “back to the Papi Steak restaurant where he contacted the police.”
During the alleged assault, Covington broke his front left tooth and suffered an abrasion on his left wrist, according to a police report. Covington added that he identified Masvidal from the sound of his voice and also recognized his hair sticking out of his sweatshirt, as the UFC welterweight was allegedly wearing a blue surgical face mask with the sweatshirt pulled up over his head.
Police obtained CCTV footage of the incident and wore body cameras as they spoke to Covington and other witnesses to the altercation.
Masvidal posted a video late Monday night that appeared to mention the altercation after it happened.
“Call it a ‘show your face’ challenge,” Masvidal said. “What’s the matter, I’m from Dade County. You say this shit that you should support. This is how my city rolls.
He then posted a message on Twitter early Tuesday morning that appeared to mention what he allegedly said to Covington during the incident.
“Good morning to everyone, except for those who think that talking about someone’s children is cool,” wrote Masvidal.
The situation between Masvidal and Covington became unstable after they already met in the main event of UFC 272 in early March. Covington won the fight via unanimous decision and continued to taunt Masvidal on social media for days and weeks after the event ended.
At the UFC 272 post-fight press conference, Masvidal said he intends to settle his grudge with Covington outside of the cage after the former interim UFC welterweight champion called on his children while preparing for the fight.
“He’s still someone who, if I see him on the street, I’ll give him everything I have to break his damn jaw,” Masvidal said. “It doesn’t matter if I lost the wrestling matches today, I still think he’s fucking n****.”
No formal charges have yet been filed and Masvidal has not been arrested at this time.
