A 20yearold woman was hit by a train after being left handcuffed in a police car parked on a railroad track in Fort Lupton, Colorado, United States. Yareni RiosGonzalez was seriously injured and hospitalized, according to CPR News, Colorado’s public radio station.

According to the Colorado Bureau of Investigation, on Sept. 17, a police officer approached Yareni RiosGonzalez while driving on Highway 85 in a suspected firearm incident.

Then two more police officers came and the young woman was arrested and handcuffed. They put her in the back of the officer’s car, which was parked illegally on the tracks, CPR News reported.

Searching Yareni’s car, officers noticed an approaching train honking its horn. The vehicle hit the vehicle with the suspect inside.

RiosGonzalez suffered “serious physical injuries” including multiple broken ribs and a fractured sternum.

Platteville Police Chief Carl Dwyer confirmed that the Platteville Police Officer concerned is on administrative leave pending the ongoing investigation. CPR News contacted the Fort Lupton Police Department but received no response.

On Tuesday (27th), the radio reported that the young woman wanted to file a lawsuit against the police. Yareni RiosGonzalez’s attorney, Paul Wilkinson, said she was discharged from the hospital.

“She’s a young woman who wants to be outside with her friends and go to work, among other things, which she enjoys doing. But she knows it will be a while before she can return to normal life.”
