“It was stressful, I had never done that before! But when I saw the incomprehension in his eyes, I understood that I was like his lifeline in this particularly difficult moment,” says Seyda Kaya.

The Service de Police de la Ville de Montréal (SPVM) officer had no idea what to expect on July 15 when she first went to CHU Sainte-Justine with a colleague.

While she was waiting for a file from the DPJ, we announced over the facility’s intercom that we were looking for a Turkish interpreter in the delivery room “immediately”.

“I told myself that if I had been in his situation, I would have liked someone to help me. Not understanding something when you are about to give birth must be unimaginable,” says the 25-year-old young woman.

A “very moving” moment

Born to parents of Turkish descent, Ms Kaya rushed to offer help to the mother-to-be after making sure she could leave her post.

She initially acted as an intermediary between the doctors and the patient to explain the procedure related to the caesarean section that the latter had to undergo. But she was quickly asked if she could stay with the lady during her confinement.

“It went really well,” assures the policeman. I was there for the whole scene, it was a very moving moment, very beautiful. »

The intervention also caused a stir within the SPVM, which congratulated her on the altruism she showed when she had barely joined the organization.

“It was the first time that I witnessed a situation of this kind, and I can only praise Agent Kaya’s efforts in this case,” emphasizes her supervisor Valéry Plante.

A healthy baby

A few days after the birth, Seyda Kaya visited the mother and the child she was assisting with the birth. Moments before returning to work, she was able to hug little Zumera Mina in perfect health.

“His mother told me she was eternally grateful and didn’t know how to repay me. But I was just proud and happy to be able to help him! ‘ said the police officer.

She also planned to visit the small family again during the holiday season.
