Mani Ratnam’s Ponniyin Selvan Part I continues to break box office records. After atgreat opening, The historical drama saw a 40 percent increase in Hindi version collections, bringing the grand total to Rs 4.35 crore.
According to Box Office India, the film grossed Rs. 28.50 crore on the second day, bringing the total for the whole of India to Rs. 59.75 crore net. The film is doing extremely well in Tamil Nadu and will challenge Vikram, who has been one of the year’s top-grossing films.
The star-studded film, which also stars Karthi, Jayam Ravi, Trisha, Vikram and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, among others, had raised around Rs 80 crore on opening day, making it the biggest Tamil opening film at the worldwide box office, and will be be seen faster during the holidays.

The film had opened in Tamil Nadu at Rs 25 crore and grossed Rs 34.25 crore overseas. Film trade analyst Manobala Vijayabalan tweeted the numbers.

Ponniyin Selvan had faced stiff competition from Hrithik Roshan and Saif Ali Khan’s Vikram Vedha, but the Hindi crime thriller failed to make an impressive opening despite strong word of mouth. Vikram Vedha had earned approximately Rs 11.56 cr on the opening day.
Ponniyin Selvan: I, based on Kalki’s popular works, has received rave reviews. Indianexpress.com’s Kirubhakar Purushothaman praised the film as a “faithful” and “brilliant” adaptation with no dull moments. In his review, he wrote: “Mani Ratnam understands that Kalki’s novel is a mainstream page-turner, so it keeps its flavor and doesn’t spiritualize it or dumb it down.”
