Pope Francis celebrated the traditional midnight mass this Saturday evening (December 24), in which he spoke about hunger, greed and wars. On Christmas 10 as a pontificate, 7,000 people attended the Christmas Eve ceremony inside St. Peter’s Basilica in the Vatican, and another 4,000 attended outside in St. Peter’s Square.
Due to a knee problem, the Pope needed a wheelchair as he cannot stand for long periods. At the altar, he criticized what he called the “greed and hunger for power” that causes people to “eat even their neighbors.”
“Men and women in our world are even consuming their neighbors, their brothers and sisters, in their hunger for wealth and power,” the pope said.

criticism of wars
Without mentioning the ongoing confrontation in Ukraine, the Pope condemned the wars. “How many wars have we seen! And in how many places human dignity and freedom are still being disregarded today,” he said.
On other occasions, the Pope has already condemned the confrontation in Ukraine. More recently, at the celebration of the Madonna Mass (Mass dedicated to Our Lady, a Catholic saint), the Pope wept as he spoke about the Ukrainian people. “Thank you, our mother! As we look at you we can continue to believe and hope that love will overcome hate, truth will overcome lies, forgiveness will overcome offense and peace will triumph over war. So be it!” said the Pope at the end of the prayer.
