Pope meets politicians and clerics in Mongolia

After his arrival in Mongolia and a first day without commitments, Pope Francis continues his visit on Saturday with several events and meetings. The head of the Catholic Church will be received at the official welcome ceremony in Sükhbaatar Square in the center of Mongolia’s capital Ulan Bator in the morning (9:00 local time/3:00 CEST).

The 86-year-old’s presence in the East Asian country was eagerly awaited by the small Catholic community – he is the first pope to visit Mongolia. Before his first major speech (04:20 CEST) to government and civil society representatives, the pontiff will meet with Mongolian President Ukhnaagiin Khurelsukh for a discussion. He will then meet with Prime Minister Luwsannamsrajn Ojuun-Erdene and Speaker of Parliament Gombojav Zandanshatar. In the afternoon he meets with the clergy at the Cathedral of Saints Peter and Paul. During his visit, Francis mainly intends to strengthen the Catholic community with almost 1,500 members and promote dialogue between religions.
