Popular Consultation in Ecuador Would Focus on Security

According to ruling National Democratic Action (ADN) MP Diego Matovelle, the constitutional referendum will aim to resolve the insecurity crisis and its questions will include issues such as extradition of criminals and a rethink of states of exception, he said.

Matovelle told broadcaster Ecuavisa that support for the military in times of internal unrest would have limits, as this South American country has several international treaties that bind it.

But constantly declaring a state of emergency, as former President Guillermo Lasso did, is a huge waste of resources, he warned.

For this reason, he stressed, the strategy is to modify this issue through some questions in the popular consultation.

The lawmaker added that the executive wants to return to the issue of extradition of criminals, developed by Lasso and for which 51.6 percent of Ecuadorians received no votes on February 5 of this year.

Such questions are already being analyzed with the lawyers and will be presented to them in the coming days, he revealed.

Recently, the chairwoman of the ADN Bank, Valentina Centeno, argued that the popular consultation will also address issues related to the promotion of private investments and the functioning of the judicial system, where it is necessary to decipher all the corruption that exists in it.

For his part, Noboa explained that this mechanism is the first major measure of his government to free the country from the “darkness” in which it finds itself, he said.

The 35-year-old businessman last week formally welcomed a country mired in the worst security crisis in its history and facing economic problems that analysts say would be difficult to resolve in just a year and a half in office.

Although their proposals give hope to citizens, there are still those who remain skeptical since the concrete strategy for achieving them is not clear.
