Popular summit in Brussels advertised in Spain

Madrid, 9 May (Prensa Latina) Spain, coordinated by MEP Manu Pineda, is promoting the holding of a popular summit to mark the EU-Celac meeting in Brussels next July.

Pineda chaired today a preparatory meeting at the European Parliament headquarters in Madrid, bringing together delegates from Brazil, Peru and Colombia, and Ambassador Abdulah Arabi, representative of the Polisario Front delegation in Spain.

The MEP from Izquierda Unida (IU) presented the initiative of the popular summit that will take place on July 17th and 18th in parallel with that of the European Union (EU) and the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (Celac).

The initiative was promoted by embassies, social actors, politicians and associations and migrant groups, in addition to the direct work of IU, the Spanish Communist Party and trade unions.

Pineda emphasized that he hopes for a respectful and constructive meeting between the EU and Celac, but also expressed his concern that some circles in the European common bloc intend to impose their recipes agreed with the United States.

The aim is to take advantage of the important meeting between European and Latin American governments to appreciate and defend a new multipolar international order, more just and supportive, the parliamentarian specified.

He pointed out that at a previous meeting on April 26, the decision was made to include Palestine and the cause of the people of Western Sahara in view of the ongoing occupation of Israel and Morocco respectively.

There will be associations from various Latin American countries, from the Sao Paulo Forum, the Institute for Friendship with the Peoples (Icap) of Cuba; around 40 European foundations, the European Left, the Belgian Labor Party and the group The Left of the Eurochamber, Pineda stressed.

On the weekend before the appointment in Brussels, that is on July 8th and 9th, a building of the Workers’ Commissions (CCOO) will serve as a meeting place to finalize the details of the People’s Summit.

Human rights, climate change, real democracy and coups, feminism and women’s rights, the extreme right and peace in Latin America, Palestine and Western Sahara will be part of the parallel meeting in the Belgian capital.

The Polisario Front delegate praised the proximity of history and language to Latin America “because we were colonized by the same protagonist and in our case suffered from Moroccan interference in the conspiracy of Europe”.

Arabi added that after 47 years of struggle and resistance, the Saharawi people continue to resist and the Polisario will celebrate the 50th anniversary of its founding on May 10.
