The new residence model for Brazilian citizens and citizens of other member countries of the CPLP (Community of Portuguese Speaking Countries) in Portugal has come into force. The document is online and valid for one year.

The CPLP includes Angola, Brazil, Cape Verde, GuineaBissau, Equatorial Guinea, Mozambique, Portugal, Sao Tome and Principe and East Timor.

The new law, which came into force on March 1, allows immigrants to live in Portugal for up to a year after issuing a digital certificate, which costs 15 euros. The document will speed up the residency process and prevent people from having to face the socalled “expression of interest,” a process that can take around two years.

The big advantage is that immigrants with this “automatic residence permit” can, for example, legally work, attend courses and rent real estate.

According to Portuguese website Expresso, this oneyear residence permit for CPLP citizens comes after the new regime for immigrant entry into Portugal, which came into force in November 2022. It facilitates the issuance of visas in the country.

According to Agência Lusa, the new model aims to legalize the situation of thousands of immigrants who have expressed interest in obtaining a residence permit between 2021 and 2022. About 150,000 people are in this situation most of them Brazilians. These people will be contacted by email to pay the fee and issue the document.

There are still details to be explained by the Portuguese government, including how the document renewal will work and whether it will create a dedicated platform for the exhibition.
