Portugal will invest between 14 and 27 million in the EU defense mechanism

Following the agreement with Ukraine announced by European Union ministers, which includes an increase in military production in the European bloc, the defense minister said that Portugal should invest between 14 and 27 million euros as part of this agreement, the European Peace Support Mechanism, which then enables the acquisition of ammunition.

At a press conference in Brussels alongside the Foreign Minister, Helena Carreiras first pointed out that Portugal “has already delivered 2,000 120mm mortar ammunition” but explains that “in fact there is no comprehensive capacity to deliver ammunition”. .

“We will participate in joint efforts both to replenish our own stocks and to examine and continue to examine the possibility of sending ammunition to Ukraine,” he said.

Helena Carreiras clarified that Portugal will contribute an amount proportional to its participation in relation to the two billion euros that the EU will spend.

“Between 2023 and 2027 we will contribute amounts between 14 and 27 million euros. Now the possibility is on the table to additionally support the mechanism itself to advance another 3,500 million euros. And this, if confirmed, will certainly force us to make additional efforts in which case Portugal would be entitled to around EUR 52 million, all of which has yet to be confirmed and defined in terms of objectives and specific areas for the use of these funds “. he said.

This Monday, Josep Borrel announced via Twitter the approval of a support of one million euros in rounds to be delivered “immediately”, with another million euros to be invested in the joint acquisition of ammunition.

The support of the ministers of the bloc known as “Jumbo” also includes a “commission to accelerate the production capacity” of ammunition.
