Postponed surgery: forced to live with a hole in the face

A healthcare worker is going through a real ordeal. Her urgent surgery has been postponed for nearly ten days and soon it will be too late to repair the damage without undergoing much major surgery. He also has to be ready for the surgery day in and day out, which means he has to fast for at least 12 hours each time.

Martin* wanted to tell his situation exclusively to QUB radio. About ten days ago he suffered an injury while playing football: he suffered a knee blow on the left side of his head. If his brain was spared, he sustained three skull fractures that left a clearly visible imprint on his face. And due to the repeated postponements, he now risks spending his entire life dealing with the aftermath of this injury.

“We had two weeks to operate on me before the bone healed, but we failed every time,” he lamented.

A brief surgical procedure lasting around 15 minutes is required to bring the framework back into the correct position. However, as he has to be put under general anesthesia, Martin has to fast from midnight until the end of his procedure, which often occurs late at night. On at least one occasion, he was forced not to drink anything, not even water, for 28 hours. A situation he can no longer endure.

“Even if I come back every day, I have no hope of getting the surgery in time,” he said. I will be an aesthetic influence for the rest of my life.”

Despite everything, Martin believes that his colleagues have done everything to help him and insists on their good cooperation. Every day they try to perform the procedure. But the lack of staff and the lack of availability of operating theaters weigh heavily on the scales. Martin particularly regrets that there appears to be no accountability in our healthcare system, no one to turn to to resolve the situation.
