Almost three months after the start of the protest movement, following the death last September of Mahsa Amini, this young Iranian Kurdish woman while being detained by the Morality Police, the Iranian authorities announced the disappearance of those police.

“The very people who created the morality police dismantled them,” proclaimed the country’s Attorney General Hojatolislam Mohammad Jafar Montazari laconically. In recent years, the vice squad (established in 2005) has been criticized for violently arresting poorly veiled young women.

Demonstrations began in September to protest Death of Mahsa Amini arrested by the same morality police for disregarding the wearing of the Islamic veil. Then they took a political turn with much tougher slogans against Iranian leaders and Islamic power and killed hundreds. Yesterday, Saturday, the Interior Ministry reported more than 200 deaths since the demonstrations began, including members of the security forces, demonstrators, but also members of armed groups qualified as counter-revolutionaries

A fine for wearing the veil improperly?

At the same time, the Attorney General announced that Parliament and another body, led by President Ebrahim Raissi, are working on amending the law on the compulsory wearing of the Islamic veil, without specifying in which direction the text should be changed. The result will be announced within fifteen days.

Police could stop all arrests and issue fines for non-compliance with the veil, according to an MP. In fact, in recent weeks we have seen increasing numbers of Iranian women, especially young people, being unveiled without police intervention. Some women walk down the street in trousers and a simple jacket, without even putting on a simple scarf, in case the police make any comments to them.

Calls to demonstrate starting tomorrow Monday

These announcements come as calls have been made for three days of demonstrations and strikes starting Monday. These calls were shared on social media by activists and unknown groups for three days of protests and strikes between Monday and Wednesday. Some of these calls invite protesters to arm themselves and attack key centers of power.

Another announcement this Sunday concerns the execution of four people, dubbed “thugs,” who were executed by hanging for destruction of public property and kidnapping. According to Iranian media, these four people were also found guilty of links to the Israeli intelligence services.
