Powerball: Store employee reacts after winning ticket for $1.765 billion jackpot in Kern County

FRAZIER PARK, Calif. (KABC) — The day after California Lottery officials announced that the winning ticket for the estimated $1.765 billion Powerball jackpot was sold in Kern County on Wednesday evening, a liquor store employee said , in which it was purchased, shared her astonished reaction.

Midway Market and Liquor in Frazier Park employee Janea Herrera described the realization as “surreal.”

After learning that the store had sold the golden ticket, “I just couldn’t stop wondering who won,” she said in an interview with ABC7 Thursday morning.

The jackpot winner has not yet come forward and has not been identified by lottery officials.

Asked if she believed the ticket holder was a Frazier Park resident, Herrera replied with a smile: “I hope so.”

The winning numbers in the drawing were 22, 24, 40, 52, 64 and the Powerball 10.

Before anyone won the huge prize, there were 35 consecutive drawings without a grand winner until July 19, when a player in California matched all six numbers and won $1.08 billion.

The jackpot is the second largest lottery prize in the world, having been drawn 36 times in a row since the last time someone won the top prize on July 19. This series surpasses the record of 41 draws set in 2021 and 2022.

The only grand prize ever larger was the $2.04 billion Powerball won by a player in California last November.

The $1.7 billion jackpot is for the sole winner who chooses to receive the payout in the form of an annuity spread over 30 years. Winners almost always choose the cash option, which is valued at $774.1 million for Wednesday night’s drawing.

In addition to the jackpot ticket sold at Frazier Park, Atlantic Wine and Spirits in Monterey Park sold a 5/5 ticket. This ticket is worth $760,111.
