A powerful tornado has hit the US state of Florida. Thousands of residents are reported to have lost power and dozens of cars were destroyed. No casualties or injuries have been reported so far. The warning applies to the south of the state, including the city of Miami.
According to the website PowerOutage.us, which tracks power outages across the United States, nearly 13,000 customers in Florida are without power today due to the ravages of the atmospheric phenomenon whose winds were blowing north of Miami.
The damage is widespread in the Palm Beach Gardens area, where residents were forced to seek shelter due to high winds that battered the region overnight, the New York Times reported.
There, branches flew dangerously in the wind and trees fell on vehicles in the Sanctuary Cove neighborhood of nearby North Palm Beach.
The roof of an apartment building was blown off and damage to homes and cars was also reported, the outlet added.
The National Weather Service reported that the tornado had an estimated wind speed of at least 100 miles per hour.
He capped the New York Times report that the United States registers more than a thousand tornadoes a year, more than any other country in the world because its geography and climate make it particularly vulnerable.
The deadliest of these events in recent years occurred in 2011, when a storm swept through Joplin, Missouri, killing more than 150 people.
Last month, a tornado devastated trailer homes and killed at least two dozen in rural Mississippi.
