The Mayor of Benito Juárez (Cancún), Ana Patricia Peralta, met with the new Sargassum Awareness Strategy Coordinator, the Head of the Governor’s Office, Artemio Santos Santos, and various agencies to work in a coordinated manner on the containment and care of Sargassum, the land on the shores of this destination during the 2023 season.
During the event, the authorities presented the strategy to be carried out to contain Sargassum, to maintain the joint work between the three levels of government to keep the city’s sandbars in optimal conditions and to preserve the natural beauty of this place the destination as one of the most important nationally and internationally.
The First Municipal Authority stressed that in 2022, thanks to the daily work of the Public Services and the Federal Maritime Terrestrial, the removal of 10,771.45 cubic meters of these microalgae was carried out, that is 7,540.02 tons collected in the sandbanks of Cancun Zone (ZOFEMAT ).
Likewise, the First Edil expressed that there are seven 600 HD sweepers, three tractors, three trailers, two Sargassum conveyors, three backhoes and eight dump trucks to take part in the massive arrival this 2023 season. and 200 employees who work daily to remove algae from the community’s public baths.

He added that for this landing there are four sargassum collection points in sandbars to later take to final disposal point at El Niño, Las Perlas, Delfines and Coral beaches; and there is a cooperation agreement with a private initiative company to receive the sargassum won free of charge for the city government.
It should be noted that Cancun is internationally recognized as the place with the most distinctive Blue Flag, with 10 certificates awarded to beaches and 31 to sustainable tourism vessels. For this reason, the city government is stepping up efforts to keep the beaches and sandbars free of these microalgae for locals and visitors to enjoy.
