The President of Mexico, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, began his first international tour covering five countries on May 5th, as part of Mexico’s Mira al Sur strategy and whose purpose is to strengthen political, economic and cooperative relations with these countries to strengthen .

The tour includes Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras, Belize and Cuba, countries with which he will discuss the development of bilateral relations.

Guatemala.

On May 5th, López Obrador was received by his counterpart Alejandro Giammatei, with whom he analyzed the causes of migration and agreed to implement various measures to curb this phenomenon.

During the meeting, 21 points were defined, in which, in addition to the issue of migration, local development was also analyzed.

Regarding irregular migration, which broke a record this year, Lopez Obrador stressed that this phenomenon is proof of injustice and Mexico has proposed to eliminate the conditions of poverty, discontent and insecurity that they create, so that no one has to leave their homeland or their family.

Projects such as Bicentennial Customs aimed at promoting greater trade flows between the two countries, the Sembrando Vide project in Guatemala which will contribute to food security and agreements on migration issues have been signed.

Both Presidents reaffirmed their fight against migrant smuggling and the fight against criminal networks.

During his visit to the country, the President of Mexico was received by President Nayib Bukele, with whom he had a private meeting.

AMLO said Mexico and El Salvador are currently facing major challenges in tackling poverty, inequality, unemployment and exclusion, which are the deep roots of insecurity, migration and other misfortunes.

The investment issue was raised when it was agreed to increase investment in the two countries, taking advantage of the free trade agreement between Mexico and Central America.

They also recognized the importance of the electrical connection project in the countries of Central America, taking into account the strategy of the energy issue. Likewise, the oil fields in the Mosquita and the Caribbean Sea recognized the potential for Honduras’ development.

They discussed steps to be taken to pay special attention to vulnerable populations and to serve their nationals abroad and to expand consular services in both countries.

They recognized the progress Honduras has made on the Sowing Life and Building the Future projects, which have led to social development and employment in the country.

An agreement has been signed between the government of Honduras and the Economic Culture Fund to open bookstores in the Central American country.

They reaffirmed efforts to fight corruption and impunity and celebrated Honduras’ actions in this regard.

The highlight of his visit, Mexico expressed its willingness to support Honduras in its energy development and thanked the Honduran government for the attention it has been given.

This Saturday, May 7th, President López Obrador will arrive in Cuba for an official visit and meeting with President Miguel Díaz-Canel Bermúdez.
