BRASILIA, Jan. 19 (Xinhua). Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva said Thursday during a meeting with rectors of universities and federal institutes from across the country that the autonomy of these institutions will be “guaranteed” during your government.

“I want them to know that the autonomy of the university is guaranteed,” said the President in the Planalto Palace, the seat of the Presidency.

He pledged that he would hold annual meetings to hear the colleges’ demands.

Former President Jair Bolsonaro (2019-2022) has repeatedly appointed rectors in the previous term who did not rank first on the triple list drawn up by the university community, prompting criticism of interference in the universities.

“Don’t think Lula will choose the principal he likes. The ones who must like the rector are the university professors and the university officials. It is the university community that needs to know who is doing well for them. I can guarantee that they will have it,” he said.

The President also called for the rectors of federal universities and institutes to help “defeat hate and ‘fake news'”.

“The emergence of a fanatical far right has appeared, it is a monster that we must face and defeat. It’s not a Brazilian problem, it’s a global problem. We have no dimension of the regression that has occurred in this country, every school, every workplace,” he added.
