President of Venezuela opens the 19th edition of Filven

The President of Venezuela, Nicolás Maduro, opened this Thursday in El Laguito, in the military district of Caracas (capital), the 19th edition of the International Book Fair of Venezuela (Filven), with Colombia as guest of honor.

Opening the event, the Venezuelan President expressed that Colombia and Venezuela are a single homeland.

“The poison of hatred should never be sown among us again, we are brothers, Colombia and Venezuela are one people and we must love each other,” said President Maduro.

Filven also counts the State of Amazonas among its guests of honor and dedicates this occasion to the celebration of the 190th anniversary of the National Library of Venezuela and the 50th anniversary of Editorial Vadell.

The late Venezuelan writers Carmen Delia Bencomo and Domingo Alberto Rangel as well as the Palestinian writers Heba Abu Nada and Adania Shibli will also be honored.

Abu Nada died recently, following the start of Israel’s current escalation against the Palestinian people; while Shibli’s prize at the Frankfurt International Book Fair in Germany for his work “A Minor Detail” was canceled.

Filven will take place from November 9th to 19th and expects the presentation of about 200 books as well as artistic activities, forums, conferences and discussions related to art and literature.

About 161 Venezuelan writers will take part in Filven and 65 invited authors from countries such as Colombia, Argentina, Cuba, Honduras, Spain, Costa Rica, Iran, France, Mexico, El Salvador, Chile, Italy and Uruguay.

Venezuela and Colombia sign memorandum of understanding on cultural issues

As part of the inauguration, Venezuelan Minister of Culture Ernesto Villegas and Colombian Minister of Arts, Knowledge and Culture Juan David Correa signed a memorandum of understanding on cultural affairs that will allow both countries to further strengthen their relations and cooperation in this sector.

The Colombian minister thanked Venezuela for inviting his country to the event and assured that the attack by nations seeking to silence the voice of the people will be ineffective.

“We believe that we all fit in and that no one can deny us the ability to dream again,” he said.

For his part, the Venezuelan dignitary emphasized that with President Hugo Chávez coming to power in the South American country, the anti-values ​​of exclusion against Colombians that existed in Venezuela had disappeared.

The Venezuelan President sent a message of solidarity to the Palestinian people as part of the opening of the 19th edition of Filven.

“Violence is inevitably present in Palestine, movements that attack people, ravaged by a supremacist ideology that persecutes them, bombs them, murders them, and the people of Palestine who resist and promote their culture,” he explained.

The head of state recognized the value of Palestine’s ancient culture and assured that, despite the suffering, “he has the people of the world at his side.”

“Palestine will win sooner rather than later and we will be there, even with its victory,” he assured.
