Presidential 2022: when Marine Le Pen forgets RN MPs voted against aid to Ukraine

The Rassemblement National candidate found it difficult to justify the position of her party’s MPs.

Marine Le Pen was puzzled on Wednesday evening by the National Assembly’s ambiguity about the position towards Russia in the war in Ukraine. During an interview on BFMTV, journalist Bruce Toussaint asked her about the reasons behind the RN MPs’ vote against 1.2 billion euros in aid to Ukraine and against sanctions against Russia.

To which she replied: “That’s the whole problem of the European Court of Auditors”, without specifying the position of the same MPs before you admit not knowing the context of this vote. And adds that it was before the start of the war. Which is partly wrong.

“How do you plan to vote in Strasbourg at 2 p.m. and be in Perpignan at 7 p.m.?”

Indeed, Bruce Toussaint refers to the absence of all members of the National Rally from a vote in the European Parliament on April 7th to decide on a support for Ukraine. In fact, none of the 19 RN MPs were present that day. But they have a ready-made excuse: “Everyone was in Perpignan,” explained Thierry Mariani, as reported by Le Parisien. “We’re not talking about a campaign trip like the others, we’re talking about the last one. I assume other MEPs were absent yesterday! How do you plan to vote in Strasbourg at 2pm and be in Perpignan at 7pm?” .

And this isn’t the first time MEPs from Marine Le Pen’s party have backed it Russia by Putin since the beginning of the war. Indeed, as Sud-Ouest reports, MEP Thierry Mariani voted against a resolution aimed at providing economic aid to Ukraine. A vote that takes place on March 2, long after the Russian invasion began.
