“We agree so that the institutional measures are taken in accordance with Brazilian laws,” reads the text published on President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva’s official profile on social networks.
Alongside Lula, Arthur Lira, Chairman of the Chamber of Deputies; and Veneziano Vital do Rêgo, active in the Federal Senate; and Minister Rosa Weber from the Federal Court of Justice (STF).
“We call on society to remain calm in order to defend peace and democracy in our homeland. The country needs normalcy, respect and work for the nation’s progress and social justice,” the message concluded.
Those signers met this Monday after the headquarters of the executive, legislative and judiciary branches in that capital were raided and looted on Sunday by vandals who were supporters of defeated President Jair Bolsonaro, who did not question the outcome of October’s elections, which Lula won accept and call for a military coup.
The meeting was also attended by Defense Minister José Múcio; the Presidency’s Secretary for Social Communications, Paulo Pimenta, and STF members Luís Roberto Barroso and Días Toffoli.
The authorities in power must also attend the meetings scheduled for the day with the governors of all states.
After yesterday’s incidents, Federal District (DF) Governor Ibanie Rocha was suspended by the Supreme Court and this Monday Pilot Plan Manager (Brasilia Central Region), Ilka Teodoro, resigned.
Last night Lula visited the Planalto Palace, seat of the Executive Branch and home of the Supreme Court.
In a social network, the founder of the Workers’ Party declared that “the putschists who promoted the destruction of Brasilia’s public heritage will be identified and punished”.
Yesterday he ordered the federal government to intervene in the public security of the DF.
The aim of the operation is to put an end to “the serious disturbance of public order” in the neighborhood characterized by acts of violence and the invasion of public buildings.
This provision is coordinated by Ricardo García Cappelli, the current Executive Secretary of the Ministry of Justice in charge of processing.
“These vandals, which we can call fascists, fanatics have done what has never been done in the history of this country,” Lula condemned.
