In plenary, Faustão’s son and his wife met with MP Fernando Marangoni, author of bill 1774/2023, which proposes the introduction of presumptive organ donations throughout the country. This means that all Brazilians would automatically be considered donors unless they declare “no wish” on their ID card.
“We will try to change the history of Brazil and make sure that everyone who is now in line can get an organ more quickly,” explained João Silva.
What does PL 1774/2023 say?
The bill has been under discussion in the chamber since April and allows the donation of tissues, organs or parts of the human body for transplants from people on the SUS (Unified Health System) waiting list without requiring family authorization.
According to the project, anyone who does not wish to donate an organ must note their wish on their identification document.
In the case of organ donation from people under the age of 16 or with a mental disability, the decision to donate rests with the family. The same applies if the potential donor does not have ID.
