The first day of Primavera Sound 2023 was marked by a theatrical and pompous show by the Killers, who invited a fan to play drums on stage, and a historic and surprising participation of the musician Roberto de Carvalho in Marisa Monte’s show. In honor of his wife Rita Lee (19472023), he took the stage for the first time in ten years, according to the event’s production team.

In its second Brazilian edition, the first at the Autódromo de Interlagos, Primavera Sound showed that it is definitely the most alternative event ever to take place in this venue. In the space that also hosts “Lollapalooza” and “The Town,” the lineup from the start featured performances that were much more independent than those taking place at other festivals.

The London group Black Midi took the stage to the sounds of Bonde do Tigrão, just after 2:30 p.m., when the thermometer reached 35°C. After introducing the funk sound, the band presented their experimental rock, whose shouted and spoken vocals were well received by an audience of around 800 people. The Texan Dorian Electra sang even more experimentally on one of the smaller stages in a “Paquita” outfit and with dancers who once danced across the stage with paper bags on their heads.

This was the route at the beginning where most people arrived. After the show by Metric, a Canadian poprock band led by singer Emily Haines, the sound became more conventional.

With an audience of around 50,000 people half the size of larger events at the Autódromo Primavera Sound has a leaner structure and fewer queues and hassle for participants. Water and sunscreen were distributed throughout the festival grounds.

The Killers begin their show at Primeira Sound with “Mr. Bright side’

Without changing their theatrical and pompous style too much, The Killers closed Primavera Sound São Paulo Saturday on their sixth visit to Brazil. Back at the Autódromo de Interlagos, where they played to 100,000 fans at Lollapalooza 2018, the American band performed in front of half that audience: 50,000 people, according to the event’s production team. The setlist changed from show to show: This time they opened with “Mr. Brightside,” which was played at the end of previous tours. As in “Lolla,” in “For Reason Unknown,” the band repeated the part of the show where they call on a fan to play drums. Read more about the Killers’ show at Primavera Sound 2023.

With fast beats and motorcycle noises, MC Bin Laden brought São Paulo Funk to the São Paulo stage at Primavera Sound. Competing for the festival audience’s attention with the duo Pet Shop Boys, who finished their performance within the first few minutes of the funk singer’s show, Bin Laden found a modest but relatively full audience. Two lively moments for the audience came during performances of “Controllah,” his partnership with British band Gorillaz, and “Shake it Bololo,” his hit song that samples Taylor Swift’s “Shake it Off.” Read more about MC Bin Laden’s show at Primavera Sound 2023.

Pet Shop Boys rock Primavera Sound crowd with “Domino Dancing”

The Pet Shop Boys duo are traveling on the “Dreamworld” tour, which covers the hits of the band’s 40year career. But this retrospective is less extravagant compared to the duo’s other performances which doesn’t mean it’s any less beautiful or exciting. Singer Neil Tennant and keyboardist Chris Lowe, for example, cannot do without the lavish costumes (which are changed during the show), nor the lighting structure and the large screen that occupies the stage. Marisa Monte pays tribute to Rita Lee and invites Roberto de Carvalho to the Primavera Sound stage

Marisa Monte washed the souls of the passionate and broken hearts that beat at the festival. In an emotional tribute to Rita Lee, who died earlier this year, the singer used the end of her show to pay tribute to the rocker defined by her as “that unforgettable woman who gave a voice to so many of us” and invited Roberto de Carvalho, musician and husband of Rita, enters the stage. According to the festival’s production team, it was the first time Roberto was on stage in ten years. Read more about Marisa Monte’s show at Primavera Sound 2023.

Cansei de Ser Sexy singer speaks to the audience at Primavera Sound

Most fans don’t cope well with a hangover anymore, but Cansei de Ser Sexy’s show at the festival had a certain vibe of wild youth. An icon of an alternative generation from the early 2000s, the band was nostalgic on stage from the first sound the sound of the dialup internet connection, familiar to anyone who lived through CSS’s heyday. The repertoire included early childhood hymns such as “Alala” and “Bezzi”. But the audience was surprised by the absence of “Meeting Paris Hilton” and the hit “Superafim”. The Hives singer makes the audience jump and vibrate with a show in Primavera Sound

The repertoire of the Swedish group The Hives included eleven songs, including wellknown songs, to the delight of their fans. “Good Samaritan” and “Go Right Ahead” were celebrated. And it didn’t take long for them to remember “Hate to Say I Told You So.” The funny “Tick Tick Boom” captivated the audience, who screamed like a sixth member of the group.
