More and more revelations are coming to light in Prince Harry’s memoir Spare. One story sheds light on a very timely event, the death of Queen Elizabeth II in September 2022. In his book, the Duke of Sussex claimed that his wife Meghan Markle was married to King Charles III. was banished from the Queen’s deathbed.
The king didn’t want the duchess to see Elizabeth in her last moments, for reasons the Chron reports, calling it “nonsensical and disrespectful”.
Harry responded to his father’s decree by saying, “Never speak of my wife like that!”
The King eventually apologized to Harry, but it appears the damage was done. When news of Elizabeth’s ailing health reached the Sussexes, they were in London to celebrate the WellChild awards ceremony. Shortly after, they decided to travel to Balmoral together, a decision announced by their spokesperson – but it was made clear a few hours later that Harry would be traveling alone.
“Charles told Harry that it was not right or appropriate for Meghan to be in Balmoral at such a sad time,” a source said. He was advised that Kate would not be leaving and that the numbers really should be limited to immediate family.”
When Harry arrived in Balmoral he had some quiet moments with his grandmother and spent the evening with his father and brother before returning to his wife. He also says he was not informed of her actual death until he first saw it in an article.
In Spare, Harry claims that his father’s animosity towards Meghan is about fear of being “overshadowed” by the beautiful and charismatic former actress, and strongly implies that the king’s fears for Meghan reflect his dislike of the late’s popularity Princess Diana reflected in the people.
However, Charles told Harry that he would not support Meghan financially as he was “not made of money”.
