Prince William apologizes in video for not attending World Cup final to cheer on Lionesses Charlotte follows the argument over his decision not to fly out to the game
Prince William has apologized in a video message with Princess Charlotte for not coming to the Women’s World Cup final to cheer on the Lionesses in person.
The Prince of Wales, who is also president of the Football Association, has faced backlash for deciding not to fly to Australia for England’s first World Cup final since 1966, despite members of the Spanish royal family planning a trip.
William sat on a bench next to his daughter Princess Charlotte and said: “Lionesses, I want to send you good luck for tomorrow.”
“We’re sorry we can’t be there in person, but we’re so proud of everything you’ve accomplished and the millions you’ve inspired here and around the world.” So get out there tomorrow and really enjoy yourself.”
A beaming Charlotte, clutching a soccer ball in the short clip, added: “Good luck lionesses!”
Prime Minister Rishi Sunak is also unlikely to take part in tomorrow’s final against Spain, which has drawn further criticism – as the government frantically sent Foreign Secretary James Cleverly to Sydney to support Sarina Wiegman’s side.

Kensington Palace confirmed earlier this week that the Prince of Wales would not be making the trip Down Under. Instead, he will be cheering from home for the Lionesses, who are contesting their first World Championship final.
Travel costs and carbon footprint were cited as reasons for the prince’s non-travel.
But as critics focused on the prince this week, Women’s Equality Party leader Mandu Reid told Web yesterday: “It is absolutely ridiculous that England were not and are still not ready to host the final of the Women’s World Cup to celebrate.”
“The President of the Football Association, Prince William, is not bothering to attend, licensing laws have not been relaxed, there will be no screen in Trafalgar Square and there has been no news of a big celebration should they win.”
“This last-minute rush by our leaders for support for the Lionesses is not only embarrassing, but also shows how little they think of women’s sports.”
“You can guarantee that there is no way the men’s football team will be treated with such disregard and disrespect.”
