In Harry & Meghan, Prince Harry recalls his mother Princess Diana’s struggles with tabloids. Commenting on old footage of the late king, the Duke of Sussex takes time during the Netflix documentaries to explain how difficult his mother’s relationship with the media has become. But there’s one particular interview in the series that Harry’s older brother, Prince William, is reportedly not happy about.
The docuseries features footage of Princess Diana’s infamous interview with Panorama, in which she discusses the breakup of her marriage and her struggles as a member of the royal family. The Prince of Wales is furious at the use of the footage in his brother’s Netflix project, according to a royal expert. “[William] will be angry,” royal insider Katie Nicholl shared with OK! via the Chron. “William has campaigned to ensure that this footage is never shown again, so it will be very frustrating for William to see it used on his brother’s own reality TV show.”

The Panorama interview was conceived by BBC reporter Martin Bashir, who used fake bank statements to gain access to Princess Diana. An examination of the interview revealed that Bashir “deceived” the late king. Both William and Harry have spoken out about how much pain their mother was in at the time of the interview. And since the investigation, William has requested that the footage be archived.
Despite the deceptive circumstances surrounding the interview, some royal experts have claimed the locking up of the footage would only serve to “posthumously muzzle” Diana and her experience as a member of the royal family. Royal biographer Andrew Morton has called the interview “an important, historical interview that should be part of the public record”.

As for Harry, the Duke of Sussex may have felt that his mother’s words in the interview aptly illustrated similar struggles Meghan Markle faced after marrying into the royal family. The Panorama interview will always serve as a painful reminder not only of how far some were willing to go to obtain information about the royal family, but also of how difficult Princess Diana’s experience was.
