Priscilla vs. Elvis: How do Baz Luhrmann and Sofia Coppola's films contradict each other? I love cinema

Priscilla, the Sofia Coppola biopic, has finally arrived in Brazilian cinemas.

As the cinema gods would have it, we were able to see not one, but two adaptations of Elvis Presley's life in theaters in just over a year. However, the two films already reveal their central opposites in the title: The first, Elvis, by Baz Luhrmann. The second, Priscilla, by Sofia Coppola.

Both Elvis and Priscilla had the “blessing” of the King of Rock’s exwife, Priscilla Presley. But while Elvis wants to pay homage to the music legend, Priscilla attempts an investigative analysis of the most problematic aspects of Elvis' life. And for the real Priscilla, Sofia Coppola “did her homework” in preparation for her film (Via: Collider).

Priscilla: What is true and what is fiction in a Sofia Coppola biopic?

Can Sofia Coppola's Priscilla correct some of Elvis' mistakes?

Above all, “Priscilla” is less a biopic about the artist's wife and more a comingofage story about how a girl becomes a woman and realizes her full potential. It's definitely not trying to be another movie about Elvis (even though it is). What is particularly missing from Baz Luhrmann's feature film is a more careful description of the relationship between Presley and his wife or even an attempt to portray Priscilla in all her complexity.

Among the many aspects highlighted in Priscilla and somewhat ignored in Elvis is the significant age difference between the couple Priscilla was only 14 when she met the star. The couple officially married in 1967 and divorced in 1973. And as described in Priscilla's autobiography Elvis & Me, which served as inspiration for the feature film, the relationship wasn't always happy.

Both for those who liked (or didn't like) Austin Butler's Elvis, and for those who want to see Jacob Elordi and Cailee Spaeny's performances, Priscilla is in theaters now. You can also rewatch Elvis on HBO Max.
