Pro Russian Officials Killed and New American Military Aid: The Update on the War in Ukraine

The Murders

There were two heavy attacks within a few hours. A bomb killed the prosecutor general of the self-proclaimed Lugansk Republic while he was in his office with his deputy. A few hours later, two officials, a man and a woman, were eliminated in Berdyansk: they held administrative positions in the occupied territories, and the woman headed the electoral commission charged with preparing the referendum on annexation. They are raids led by saboteurs and partisans, part of a planned strategy to destabilize the areas occupied by the invaders. There are many episodes with different modi operandi to underline the existence of a secret network in which special forces, civilian resistance fighters, elements capable of surprise movements. And the psychological effect is amplified because it is added to the traditional pressures of war (manoeuvres, bombing).

The New American Aid

Washington, meanwhile, is launching other aid but not including long-range missiles. In the package there are rockets for the Himars, 155mm precision projectiles (range 24-70 kilometers), 35,000 ammunition for 105 (12 kilometers) guns, winter equipment, mines, means for logistics, anti-drone systems, night vision goggles, mines. Material that must guarantee fire and agility against resistance, a tactic used to break through in the Kharkiv sector. Zelensky’s generals would like to have the Atacms, bombs that can be launched from the Himars and hit targets 300 kilometers away. However, the White House remains opposed. At least for now. There are two reasons for this: the first is that the Kremlin sees this scenario as an act of war, direct US involvement; secondly, that Ukraine – declares those who justify the moderate choice – would not need it, developments on the ground have shown that the available arsenal is sufficient. I disagree with some experts who have been asking for the posting for months and believe they could really make a difference. Kyiv has repeatedly pledged not to use long-range weapons on Russian territory (a feared situation) in hopes of convincing NATO, but commitments are difficult to honor in a conflict. Especially if the army continued to destroy civilian infrastructure such as dams and power plants.

The shares

The Pentagon came up with a stockpile plan after shipping huge quantities of weapons to Ukraine. Since the end of February, in addition to the Himars bombs, she has guaranteed the Ukrainians about 807,000 155mm bullets and 144,000 105mm pieces. An effort that has alarmed Congress and generals who see reserves in the deposits dwindling. Hence funds, increased production and plans to double or triple stock. On the agenda is a contract for 1,800 anti-tank spears, which in turn are destined for national needs. After many announcements, the agreement between Germany and Greece seems to have been realized in this gigantic market: the Germans are giving the Marders armored vehicles to Athens and the Greeks are supplying about forty older vehicles (Bmp1) to the Ukraine. The Lithuanians, in turn, ensured the receipt of long calibers, while the Finns sent their tanks.

Hints

The powerful support – we’re over $15 billion – in favor of Zelenskyy’s army is offset by the constant references to reality. American officers do not belittle Ukraine’s victories, they agree with the problems of the invaders, but expect fierce battles in the near future and explain this to the media in a pounding tone. Understandable for everyone.
