Prosecutor: So far 1,222 dead have been discovered in Kiev region

According to Ukrainian sources, more than 1,200 people were found dead in the region around Kiev. In an interview with British broadcaster Sky News on Sunday, prosecutor Iryna Venediktova called the death toll at 1,222 “in the Kiev region alone”. She again accused Russian troops of serious war crimes.

The Russian army withdrew from the region around the Ukrainian capital Kiev about a week ago and is currently redeploying in eastern Ukraine. Dramatic conditions prevailed in cities near Kiev after the withdrawal of Russian troops.

international terror

Initial reports last weekend that hundreds of civilians may have been killed in the Kiev suburb of Bucha caused international outrage. Over the course of the week, similar reports from elsewhere, like Irpin or Borodjanka, piled up.

Moscow denies any responsibility for the killings and speaks of fake photos and videos. However, materials such as satellite imagery and recordings of intercepted radio communications suggest that Russian soldiers are responsible.

5,600 alleged war crimes

In the interview with the British broadcaster, prosecutor Venediktova also announced investigations into 5,600 alleged war crimes against 500 suspects from the ranks of the Russian military and government in Moscow, including the head of the Kremlin. “Vladimir Putin is the main war criminal of the 21st century,” said Venediktova.

She also referred to the rocket attack on the Kramatorsk train station in eastern Ukraine on Friday, which Ukrainian sources said killed 52 people. There is evidence that Russia was behind the attack, the prosecutor said. Here, too, Moscow denied responsibility and blamed the Ukrainian army.
