London, 1 April (EFE). – Activists from environmental groups Extinction Rebellion and Just Stop Oil blocked ten petrol stations across England today to protest the rise in UK hydrocarbon production.
Police in the county of Essex (east England) arrested 13 people who had taken part in various protests, while ExxonMobil reported it had been forced to suspend operations at four of its terminals.
Andy Smith, a spokesman for Extinction Rebellion, told the media that protesters had blocked three key fuel distribution facilities in the UK: Esso West (near London’s Heathrow Airport); Esso Hythe (southern England) and BP Hamble (southern England) and seven other terminals.
“The Just Stop Oil coalition is calling for an end to the government’s genocidal policy of expanding oil and gas production. We call on all those outraged by the prospect of a climate meltdown and those suffering the cost of the fuel crisis to join us,” the environmental group said in a statement.
For their part, Extinction Rebellion said it would hold more protests in London over the coming weeks against the use of fossil fuels.
During today’s demonstrations, activists sat at the entrances to the oil facilities to prevent trucks from passing through, while some of them entered the terminals and climbed onto the fuel tanks.
Essex County Deputy Police Commissioner Rachel Nolan warned the activists had created an “extremely dangerous situation,” while security forces in Hampshire, southern England, reported they were “facilitating the right to peaceful protest” and “ensuring the safety of all involved guarantee”. .” EFE
