Protests against police violence: New riots after fatal shooting of 17 year old near Paris

The riots are reminiscent of the extreme riots of 2005. At that time, two black boys were killed while fleeing the police.

After a policeman shot and killed a 17-year-old, there were riots in the Parisian suburb of Nanterre for the second consecutive night. For fear of violent protests, the police deployed thousands of security forces at night.

Macron: “It’s inexplicable”

Young Nahel M. tried to flee a traffic stop. The incident sparked a renewed debate in France about police action against people in need, particularly members of ethnic minorities.

President Emmanuel Macron called the teenager’s death “unforgivable”.

“First of all, I would like to express the dismay of the entire nation at what happened and the death of young Nahel. Our solidarity and affection goes out to his family. A teenager has been murdered. It is inexplicable,” Macron said.

The hustle recalls the year 2005

Politicians from all parties condemned the incident. Members of the French parliament commemorated the dead with a minute’s silence. Prime Minister Elisabeth Borne criticized the police’s actions.

There were also riots in other cities such as Toulouse and Lille. The riots are reminiscent of those of 2005. At the time, two black boys were killed while fleeing police. As a result, around 10,000 cars were set on fire and a total of 6,000 people were arrested.
