Protests in Peru have already claimed 23 lives: 14 have occurred since the state of emergency was declared

Peruvian authorities on Saturday afternoon updated the total tally of deaths that have occurred during demonstrations that broke out in Peru following the removal and arrest of former President Pedro Castillo. This brings the total number of deceased to 23.

The Regional Directorate of Health of the Province of Lima (Diresa) announced the death of one more person due to clashes at Ayacucho Airport between protesters trying to take over the terminal and the Peruvian armed forces.

“It is reported that despite the best efforts of the health workers and doctors at the Ayacucho Regional Hospital One of the injured died in the early hours of this day.”said Diresa in a statement, as reported by broadcaster RPP.

Such is the overall balance of deaths in Peru increased to 23, 14 of which took place after the state of emergency decreed by the Peruvian government last Thursday.

The latest deaths came amid fierce protests across Peru following the ouster and arrest of former President Castillo on December 7. The demonstrators are demanding that President Dina Boluarte dissolve the congress and call new parliamentary elections.

the Peruvian government declared a nationwide state of emergency for a period of 30 days in response to the protests in favor of Castillo. Likewise, the executive branch declared a state of emergency on the national road network and allowed the army to take to the streets to protect the country’s strategic points.
