Protests storm in Georgia against “departure from Europe”

Civil rights activists and the opposition accuse the government of diverting the country from a pro-European path and throwing it into the arms of Moscow. The trigger for the rage is a law on “foreign agents”.

Thousands of angry protesters are marching through Georgia’s capital, Tbilisi, chanting anti-government slogans. They unfurl a huge EU flag in front of Parliament. Then some of them try to break into the parliament building. Police officers in heavy protective gear confront protesters. They threw tear gas grenades and sprayed water cannons into the crowd.

Street battles on Tuesday night are causing political unrest in the small Caucasian country. New protests were announced for the night of this Wednesday. Opposition and civil rights activists accuse the government of deviating from a pro-European course and taking Russia’s authoritarian system as a model.
