Provocation and Proof 12/01/2022 Ruy Castro

Eduardo 03 Bolsonaro used a song by Chico Buarque, “Roda Viva”, in a post without asking the author’s permission. 03 hates Chico Buarque for everything he represents in the culture and must hate “Roda Viva”, an anthem against the dictatorship which 03 defends. Hence his use of “Roda Viva” was a provocation. He did this to confront Chico Buarque and force him to sue. The process happened. And surprisingly, a judge favors 03 because Chico Buarque “cannot prove his authorship of ‘Roda Viva'”.

“Roda Viva” was the title and subject of a play by Chico Buarque that premiered on January 15, 1968 at the Teatro Princesa Isabel in Copacabana, Rio. At that time I lived in Solar da Fossa, next to the theater. My colleague from the Correio da Manhã, Germana de Lamare, was a friend of José Celso Martinez Correa, the director of the show. Every late afternoon that summer of 196768 he would pick me up at the Solar and we would go to rehearsals for Roda Viva.

I remember the night the cast learned the song with Marieta Severo. It was impossible to remain indifferent to the lyrics and their Ciranda rhythm a mature, implacable, sinister Ciranda. When he heard it raw, no one bothered to ask Chico Buarque for proof that the song was his.

Also because if not, then whose would it be? All the other big names were busy in that incredible 1968: Tom Jobim composed (with Chico Buarque himself) Sabiá; Caetano Veloso, “Baby”; Geraldo Vandré, “Wandering”; Paulinho da Viola and Hermínio Bello de Carvalho, “Sei Lá, Mangueira”; Cartola, “Yes, I have”; Antonio Adolfo and Tiberio Gaspar, “Sa Marina”; Gilberto Gil and Capinam, “Soy Loco por Ti, America”; much more. Therefore “Roda Viva” could only belong to him.

Nobody had more songs persecuted by the dictatorship than Chico Buarque. By banning it, the censorship did not require proof that he was its author.
