Putin also stated that regardless of who the new president of Brazil is, cooperation with Russia must remain the same and even expand. “We know that despite the sharp political dispute in the internal political processes, there is consensus (between Lula and Bolsonaro) on cooperation with Russia, consensus on our engagement in the BRICS, which is fundamental for us. We have a consensual and interaction relationship with Brazil. We consider Brazil to be our most important partner in Latin America and we will continue to do so. We will do our best to further develop our relationship in the future.”

At the same event, Putin said Russia was defending its “right to exist” against the West, which wanted to “destroy” it while Moscow launched a military offensive in Ukraine.
“Russia does not challenge the Western elites. Russia is just trying to defend its right to exist,” Putin said.
