Russian President Vladimir Putin initially wants to take part in the G20 summit planned for the end of the year in Indonesia, the Russian ambassador in Jakarta said on Wednesday and rejected a possible expulsion of the president because of the war in Ukraine.
The United States said on Tuesday it would consult with its partners on the possibility of excluding Russia from some international organizations such as the G20, which brings together the world’s 20 largest economies.
Diplomat Liudmila Vorobieva pointed out that the Indonesian authorities invited the Russian President to the summit of heads of state and government in Bali scheduled for November.
His eviction “will depend on many things, in particular the situation related to Covid19, which is improving. But for now, his intention is to come,” he said.
The diplomat criticized attempts by several western countries to expel Russia from some international organizations, calling it a “disproportionate” response.
However, the Russian authorities praised the “firm position” of Indonesia, which chairs this year’s G20, whose officials have stressed that the multilateral organization should primarily solve economic problems and must maintain its original goals.
“Of course, the exclusion of Russia from such a forum will not help to solve economic problems, but without Russia it will be complicated,” stressed the ambassador.
“We hope that the Indonesian government will not give in to this terrible pressure that is being exerted not only on them but also on many other countries in the world by Western nations,” he added.
