QMJHL player battles cancer

The Cape Breton Eagles announced Monday that forward Jacob Newcombe has been diagnosed with non-Hodgkin lymphoma.

The 19-year-old Nova Scotian found out about it during a recent medical exam. Newcombe was about to play a third season in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League (QMJHL).

“We are very saddened by the news of Jacob’s diagnosis, but we are equally inspired by his courage and determination. Jacob is not just a player to us; He is part of the Cape Breton Eagles family. We are committed to supporting him in any way we can as he begins his struggle,” team president Irwin Simon said in a statement.

Newcombe joined the Eagles last December after being involved in a trade with the Chicoutimi Saguenéens. He finished the season with 46 points in 69 games.

“I want to thank the Cape Breton Eagles organization, my teammates and all the staff for their support during these difficult times,” said the left winger. My main concern is my health. I look forward to getting back on the ice with my teammates and playing in front of Eagles fans in the future.”

Several people took to social media to offer their support to Newcombe, including head coach Louis Robitaille. The new Eagles driver changed his profile picture to X (formerly Twitter) in a nod to his young forward’s number, reading “91 Strong.”
