At least four people died in Japan in the magnitude 7.6 earthquake that shook the country this Monday (January 1, 2024). The information comes from the Japanese broadcaster NHK.

An elderly man died after becoming trapped in a collapsed house in Shiga city. According to the Hakui Police Station, the man was rescued but was confirmed dead during treatment at an area hospital.

According to the Japanese police agency, two other people suffered cardiopulmonary arrest during the quake in the city of Nanao.

Following the recorded earthquakes, Niigata, Toyama, Yamagata, Fukui and Hyogo regions received a tsunami warning. However, as the day progressed, the alert for locals dropped to the lowest risk level, the socalled “tsunami warning.” Russia, South Korea and North Korea have also warned of the danger of large waves.

A series of earthquakes struck Ishikawa Prefecture in Japan this Monday (January 1, 2024). According to the Japan Meteorological Agency, cited by public broadcaster NHK, the strongest earthquake had a magnitude of 7.6. The USGS from the USA speaks of a magnitude of 7.5.

In Wajima, authorities reported fires caused by the quake in downtown streets. More than 50 businesses and homes were damaged, but there are still no confirmations of deaths at the scene.

The total number of injured Japanese is also unknown, but rescue workers say they are overwhelmed by the number of requests for help across the country. Most of them are residents trapped in the rubble of houses that collapsed in the earthquake. According to the region's fire department, there have been more than 50 calls reporting cases of this type in Wajima.

According to the Japanese Defense Ministry, around 1,000 residents are seeking shelter at an Air SelfDefense Force facility in Wajima.

Cracked roads and destroyed houses can be seen in images posted on social media and in the local press. Witnesses also filmed the moment of the quake from inside facilities.
