A magnitude 4.2 earthquake struck the coast of Northern California in the United States on Friday (11). The information comes from the US Geological Survey (USGS).

The earthquake occurred at a depth of 8 km and was accompanied by aftershocks. According to the USGS, the earthquake occurred at sea, about 30 km from land.

Tremors occur frequently in California because the North American state is located in an area with cracks in the earth’s crust and tectonic plates colliding.

The region is also known for the San Andreas Fault, which is causing great concern among experts around the world.

In 1906, a magnitude 7.8 earthquake destroyed part of the city of San Francisco, killing 3,000 people.

Scientists in the field believe the region could be subject to a major earthquake, a phenomenon known as “The Big One.” This likely quake will be over magnitude 7.8. However, it is not possible to predict when the earthquake will occur.
