Quebec Liberal Party: a new leader in spring 2025 –

As our parliamentary office has learned, the Quebec Liberal Party will have a new leader in the spring of 2025, not before.

According to our information, the scenario of a late leadership contest has been maintained by the leaders of the political party, which will announce the rules of the leadership contest during a general meeting this weekend.

Interested parties therefore still have one year to decide. Contenders to the Liberal throne must be in the starting blocks sometime in the fall of 2024 or the beginning of winter. The selection of the head chef will take place a few months later, in spring 2025.

Behind the scenes, many are hoping that a later race and thus closer proximity to the election date will allow outside personalities to get involved in the adventure.

This scenario was supported by the majority of PLQ MPs. Only Frédéric Beauchemin, Marguerite-Bourgeoys’ deputy and the only elected official currently tempted by the chieftaincy, preferred a quick election campaign. Mr Beauchemin was targeted by a bullying complaint from the head of the party’s youth commission and was expelled from the Liberal caucus a week ago while the process unfolded.

The MP still made it clear that he intends to run for the General Council, which is being held in Drummondville this weekend.

At the moment, the contenders for the leadership of the PLQ are not on the streets. MPs André Fortin, Monsef Derraji and Marwah Rizqy as well as interim leader Marc Tanguay have already given up running to succeed Dominique Anglade.
