Earlier this year, original Mean Girls cast members Lindsay Lohan, Lacey Chabert and Amanda Seyfried reunited for a Walmart Black Friday commercial — but a key member of the Plastics was noticeably missing. Now Rachel McAdams reveals why Regina George missed the North Shore High School reunion.
In a new interview with Variety, McAdams explained that she has always said no to commercials in the past, and when she was first approached about the Walmart ad, she didn't know her co-stars had said yes.
“I don't know; if I'm being completely honest, I guess I wasn't that excited about doing a commercial,” McAdams told Variety. “A movie sounded great, but I've never done commercials before and it just didn't feel right “It's my taste. Plus… I didn't know everyone did it. I'd always love to be at a Mean Girls reunion and hang out with my plastics, of course, but yeah, I figured that out later.”

The Walmart ad premiered in November and featured adult versions of Cady Heron (Lohan), Gretchen Wieners (Chabert) and Karen Smith (Seyfried). In addition to singer Missy Elliott, original cast members Rajiv Surendra (who played Kevin Gnapoor) and Daniel Franzese (Damian) also appear.
McAdams also addressed rumors that she might make a cameo appearance in the upcoming film “Mean Girls,” an adaptation of the Broadway musical. The actress explained that she and writer Tina Fey tried to make something work, but ultimately her Regina won't appear in the new film. (Instead, Renée Rap plays the new Regina in the film.)
“Tina and I tried a few ideas, but in the end it was difficult to get everything to work,” McAdams explained. “I was really disappointed in everything she wanted to do. I think the direction it’s going in is going to be amazing and I can’t wait to see it.”
