WASHINGTON, April 1 (RHC) — U.S. President Joe Biden’s administration on Friday reversed a policy that allowed the expeditious deportation of migrants at the border and prevented them from seeking asylum, known as Title 42.

The repeal of the order came after years of pressure from the Democratic Party and pro-immigration advocates, who see the rule as cruel and illegal for those fleeing persecution and danger.

Because of the favorable epidemiological landscape and how the pandemic is being controlled, the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) determined that the rule is no longer necessary to protect U.S. citizens.

Earlier this week, administration officials noted that even with the repeal of Title 42, most undocumented immigrants crossing the border cannot remain in the United States.

“To be clear, the majority of those who entered the country illegally will be deported,” Kate Bedingfield, the White House communications director, said Thursday.

Although created by the Donald Trump administration (2017-2021) within days of the pandemic, Title 42 has been used approximately 1.7 million times by the Biden administration, a number that includes those that have repeated.

Washington defended its deployment, saying it was an important public health order needed to limit the spread of Covid-19 in the country. However, experts say the implementation of Title 42 had political and xenophobic motives. (Source:PL)
