The VLT (Light Rail Vehicle), which runs through the center of Rio, is the city’s most environmentally friendly means of transport. In addition, modern trams pass near green spaces that serve as lungs and relieve pressure on a metropolis. There, Rafaela Cocal, 19, photographed Yandara from “Land and passion” for this fashion shoot, emphasizing respect for nature and the importance of the alternative to rampant consumption.

Committed to sustainability as a tool for transformation, the actress shows in these pages clothing that is the result of ecomode, with traces of reuse, biodegradable materials and even a new meaning of what could have been thrown away, such as Earrings made from it doll heads.
— My grandmother always used old tires to make the living room table, so I knew how to reuse things from an early age. I’m not obsessed with shopping… Throughout my life, all my cousins have given me used clothes that no longer fit them illustrates the interpreter of the primetime indigenous woman who, in the plot, is an aspiring model and works as one Saleswoman at the chicest boutique in New Spring.
In a catwalk competition sponsored by Graça’s store (Agatha Moreira), the girl won first place and the title “Hello Grace Girl”. This is what happened to the actress from Alagoas, who became a professional model in Maceió (AL), her hometown, after being selected in a competition like the soap opera. However, this is not the only coincidence between actress and character.

After being promised marriage to an indigenous man, Yandara fell in love with bank manager Franco (Gil Coelho) and even dated the boy. But reason spoke louder than emotion and she broke off the romance to become engaged to Jurecê (Daniel Munduruku), her grandfather’s chosen one. Rafaela also recently ended a relationship in real life.
— Unfortunately, I had to end my relationship, not because I wanted to, but … I live a completely different life than the one I lived with my boyfriend. We love each other! I love him with passion, but I’m at a different point. For a long time I didn’t care that much about myself, now I make myself a priority. The breakup was a rational attitude, because if it was about the heart, I would still go out said the Capricorn woman, who has been single for a month.
New phase
Rafaela has a history of low selfesteem and says her “healing process” began at age 15, when the thenteenager studied at a private school and observed classmates worried about her appearance.
— I was never a vain girl. I always entered places knowing that I was different. I never knew what it was like to look in the mirror and like what I saw. I didn’t have my own style that made me feel good. I experienced a time of searching for myself and finding myself. To look at my best perspective on what I like most about myself. Years ago, Rafaela would have been shocked that I worked on television. I would hate to see myself on TV he says.

After entering the fashion world, the actress had to drop out of biomedical college and move to São Paulo to work in this field. In her daily life in big cities, the young woman looks for her origins in her outfits and mixes bright looks with local necklaces, chains and earrings. The daughter of a Black father and an Indigenous mother, her connection to indigenous peoples began five years ago when her maternal grandfather died.
— People always stopped me on the street and told me I looked like Pocahontas. I was curious about my origins and felt the desire to research. We finally arrived at the village (Cocal, inland from Alagoas) and I discovered all my ancestors. I had the feeling of being included, of belonging he remembers.
Indigenous descent
As the granddaughter of a shaman from the Nine O’Clock soap opera, Rafaela believes that Yandara is the role model for today’s young indigenous person who manages to be connected to today without losing her culture and respect for her people . In Walcyr Carrasco’s story, the character has a strong connection to her family, as does her interpreter.
— Especially now that I live far away. It’s been a year now, so I’m constantly on the phone with them who are still in Maceió. I’ve always been very close to my parents, I think that’s the most important thing. We have never just had a relationship of respect and hierarchy. They were both the people who supported me the most in my career. The resistance came much more from me than from them. I am very clingy and miss socializing very much. I used to cry every day because I missed you. “I think they were strong enough not to see me suffer any more,” says the actress, who has three older brothers.

If Rafaela used her work to overcome her longing for her family, winning the role of Yandara was the heartbeat of a new phase in her career. While studying theater in São Paulo for less than a year, she was invited to an audition for “Land and Passion” and couldn’t believe it when she received the positive result for her first soap opera, which led her to temporarily move to Rio.
— It’s cool to show a modern indigenous girl that she is fashionable, has a cell phone and goes to parties. “This story that the natives are only naked and have only straight hair is something from the colonizers,” analyzes the girl who today uses her high selfesteem as a mantra to live in peace in all the ways she can, be it by bike, on foot or by VLT.
