Sandeep Reddy Vanga’s Ranbir Kapoor, Rashmika Mandanna, Anil Kapoor and Bobby Deol starrer Animal will hit the screens this Friday. The film received polarizing reactions from critics and audiences alike. Director Ram Gopal Varma, who is also known for making polarizing cinema, had a lot to say about the film. Ram writes that Fatal Attraction and Lolita filmmaker Adrian Lyne once said that films should make audiences argue vigorously about what a film stands for, and that Sandeep achieved that with Animal. Describing the moment as a cinematic gem, the director writes, “One of my favorite moments was when, against all expectations, including me in the audience, he would come back with a baseball bat or something, but when he comes back with a machine gun, that’s us almost everyone fell out of their chair, and that moment is a pure cinematic gem.”

There are certain scenes in the film that have been criticized by viewers for not contributing to the plot or, worse, just serving to lure people in for no reason. However, Ram believes that they were included in the film not just for comedic relief but also to serve a purpose. “Some random comical scenes like bra strap spanking, talking about sex with the doctors, etc., to name a few that seem to have no context but in reality subconsciously act as a sledgehammer to drive the protagonist’s character into his head the viewer to drive,” he writes.

Ram also received some negative feedback, with the director claiming that it had no connection to the father-son relationship or family rivalry. He also didn’t like a particular scene where Ranbir’s character asks Tripti to lick his shoe. However, Ram claims that he likes to lick Sandeep and Ranbir’s shoes to show his appreciation for the film. He writes, “I didn’t like the shot where Ranbir asks the girl to lick his shoe, but just that one jump cut from Anil’s last dialogue to the end where the camera zooms out and shows Ranbir acting like a baby crying on Shakti Kapoor’s lap, I want to lick both your shoes.”
