Why is Randy Arozarena using “Power Boots” with Mexico at the Baseball World Cup?
Cabals are present in all sports and baseball is no exception. That’s why the Tampa Bay Rays major league (MLB) player has an ace up his sleeve before his games: he dons cowboy boots, which fill him with good luck at the start of a match.
But how does this ritual come about? One day, the Cuban-nationalized Mexican borrowed some football boots from a Mayos de Navojoa teammate in Mexico’s Pacific League. “Let’s see if these boots give me strength, I’ll hit a home run”, Arozarena said at the time, according to Paul León, owner of the shoe, in an interview with Charlyvisión. And sure enough, that’s what happened: The guy hit a home run.
Because of this, Arozarena felt it was a cabal to put on the shoes. “My teammates started telling me that they brought me good luck. I call them the ‘Power Boots,'” the outfielder told MLB.
