Rangers are very active in opening up the free agent market

A day after his contract was bought by the Winnipeg Jets, forward Blake Wheeler will resume his career with the New York Rangers.

Wheeler agreed to a one-season contract that will earn him a base salary of $800,000 and could earn $300,000 in bonuses.

On Friday, the Jets made the decision to buy out his five-year contract he signed with the Winnipeg organization in 2018 for a total of $41.3 million. Wheeler was scheduled to finish the last season of his contract, which earned him $8.25 million a year. The 36-year-old forward spent the last 12 career seasons with the Jets and one season with the Atlanta Thrashers before the franchise moved to Manitoba.

Last season, the American scored 16 goals and 55 points in 72 games. During his career in the National Hockey League, he scored 312 goals and 922 points.

An experienced goalkeeper comes along

Shortly after signing Blake Wheeler, the New York organization announced it had signed veteran goaltender Jonathan Quick for next season, who will earn an annual salary of $825,000.

The 27-year-old goalkeeper will play in a third team in his career. He spent the last 16 seasons with the Los Angeles Kings before joining the Vegas Golden Knights last season. He also won the Stanley Cup with Vegas.

In the 2022/23 season he had a record of 16-15-6.
