Rangers star Max Scherzer, who has been suffering from a mild strain of the teres major muscle in his right shoulder since Sept. 13, was added to the American League Championship Series roster ahead of Sunday’s first game against the Astros.
Scherzer posted a 3.20 ERA in eight starts after being traded to the Rangers at the trade deadline. Jordan Montgomery and Nathan Eovaldi are already scheduled to start the first two games of the ALCS, so Scherzer could make his Texas postseason debut in Game 3.
Jon Gray, out since September 28 with a right forearm strain, was also named to the ALCS squad. The right-hander took live batting practice Saturday after the Rangers’ practice at Minute Maid Park.
Gray had a rollercoaster season, finishing the season with a 4.12 ERA while ranking second on the pitching team in innings pitched (157 1/3) and strikeouts (142) at the time of the injury.
Manager Bruce Bochy said after the AL Division Series that Gray likely won’t be a starter but could be used out of the bullpen.
After Scherzer and Gray were added, Brock Burke and Matt Bush were cut from the roster. Right-hander Jonathan Hernández is still down with a right lat strain.
