Razzies strip Bruce Willis of his Worst Performance Award after being diagnosed with aphasia

The Razzie Awards, a satirical awards organization that recognizes actors and films for underperforming work, revoked a worst performance award given to Bruce Willis after the actor’s family said he suffers from aphasia, a condition that affects the affect a person’s cognitive functions.

“When an individual’s medical condition is a factor in their decision-making and/or performance, we recognize that giving them a Razzie is not appropriate,” said John Wilson and Mo Murphy, co-founders of the Razzie Awards, in a statement .

The Razzies have created a special awards category for Mr. Willis entitled Worst Performance by Bruce Willis in a Movie of 2021. Mr. Willis, who appeared in eight films last year, received the award for his performance in the film Cosmic Sin.

“The Razzies are truly sorry for #BruceWillis’ diagnosed condition,” The group announced this on Twitter The Wednesday. “Maybe that explains why he wanted to go out with a bang in 2021. Our best wishes to Bruce and his family.”

“To be clear, we heard about Willis’s diagnosis at the same time as everyone else… just this morning.” added the group. The group’s tweet apologizing for Mr Willis’ condition drew backlash from other Twitter users.

The family of Mr Willis, who is 67, announced his diagnosis in a series of Instagram posts on Wednesday and said the actor was retiring from his career.

“To Bruce’s amazing supporters, we wanted to share as a family that our beloved Bruce has been experiencing some health issues and was recently diagnosed with aphasia which is affecting his cognitive abilities,” the family statement read.

Aphasia is a language disorder that can affect a person’s pronunciation and speech. The condition can be caused by a number of events, from a head injury to a brain tumor, says the National Institutes of Health. Mr Willis’ family did not disclose how he developed the disease.

The Razzies also revoked their decades-old Worst Actress nomination, which Shelley Duvall received for her role in the 1980 film The Shining. The group said they found that director Stanley Kubrick’s treatment of Ms. Duvall during production affected the actress’ performance.

The Golden Raspberry Awards or the Razzies are usually held the day before the Oscars. The group awards what they consider to be the film industry’s worst performances. The 42nd Golden Raspberry Awards ceremony took place last Saturday.
